The Golden Compass

Yesterday, I finished reading Philip Pullman’s “The Golden Compass,” originally published in the U.K. as “Northern Lights” and the first book in the “His Dark Materials” series. Irish John recommended I read it and I’m very impressed with it. I read the entire book in one evening and part of the following morning.

The story presents a world where humans have daemons that take the shape of animals related to the human’s character. The daemons are variable in type until the child reaches puberty, after which they become fixed in form. The protagonist is a teenage girl raised as an orphan who goes through lots of adventures.

I’ve already reserved the second volume of the series at the public library.

The God of Small Things

I read Arundhati Roy’s “The God of Small Things” over the past couple of weeks. I enjoyed the sense of experiencing Kerala, where I traveled while in India. I appreciated the way Roy addressed the issue of class and caste distinctions even in the most communist part of India. Besides, it’s a great story masterfully and suspensefully woven.

When I told my housemate Vivek about it, he reminded me that I’d seen Roy speaking along with Noam Chomsky at a large stadium in Porto Alegre during the World Social Forum in January. Vivek said many Indians feel Roy’s political theories are not practical, yet the crowd in Brazil roared its approval as she spoke.

Rejection and Transience

Since both prospective parent Nina and potential longhair dating partner David have told me that things are not going to happen as I had hoped, I experienced fairly strong feelings of rejection.

On top of a flu with headaches and following a surgical procedure on my butt, I’d have to say this hasn’t been my favorite month.

I find myself wanting to cacoon at home a lot, eat healthy and not-so-healthy foods (ice cream, garlic bread made with real butter!), and watch lots of movies.

Last night, I was tossing and turning when I normally would have been sleeping. I woke up looking out through the dark fog out my window. I pleasured myself. I felt lonely and tried some little consolations like holding my own hand, petting my own hair, and visualizing cuddling with someone I love.

After awhile, I had a kind of revelation — that the rejection I was feeling had more to do with timing and circumstance than with any real deficiencies on my part. I had a sense of the transience of individual human connections and the emergence of overall patterns of caring at the social level. I felt comforted by the vision, pleasured myself once again, and finally got some more sleep!

Republicans Take Over California Governor Seat

With the victory of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Republicans will soon take over the California Governor seat. Although California’s legislature still has a Democratic majority, there will be a fight to maintain even that at the next elections.

Here in San Francisco, we voted 80% against the recall and would have elected Bustamante by a large margin. Time to secede! See http://www.freestateofsf.org/

Thank the goddess that Proposition 54 went down in flames, the only good news of the election.

Longhair Party and Folsom Fair

The fifth annual queer longhair party at my place on Folsom Fair eve went really well this time around. About 50 longhairs from around the world attended. The party started off with a visit from David who shared a delicious surprise with me up in my bedroom in preparation for the party. Christopher led a ritual to bring us together as a community and to heal those who need healing, especially Pasha and Drake. At one point, group massaging started to happen, which was wonderful! I received a massage and was lifted up into the air at the end of it.

The Folsom Fair was crowded and crazy like every year. A group of longhairs gathered first at The Hole in the Wall, then made our way over to The Eagle, then back to The Hole. At the Eagle, we created a stir by having a group make-out session, including laying Robert out across the pool table.

On Saturday, David came by to have more fun and I had another ritual, as Christopher suggested, to let go of the energy that we had gathered for the longhair event.
